Art (Avarham) Spiegelman was born in Sweden, but his parents immigrated to the U.S. when he was 3 years old. He studied art both in high school and at Harpur College, from which he graduated in 1968. His first job was designing novelty cards for Tip Top Chewing Gum, and he began to contribute comics to various underground publications, using the pseudonym Al Flooglebuckle. I'm not usually a big graphic novel reader, but this one grabbed me due to the subject matter. It found it curious and enlightening but not enthralling. The main appeal was knowing that these events actually occurred. Had it been fiction my interest would have been lost early on.
Over all it was worth the read, but it isn't one of my top picks. Then again I'm not sure I'm qualified to judge the quality of a graphic novel.
