Harlan Ellison, teaching a class that Dan Simmons was attending, encouraged Simmons to submit a story into a competition. That story became Simmons first published work and effectively launched his career.

Following his graduation from Washington University in St. Louis in 1971, Dan Simmons moved to Colorado and taught elementary school for many years, while trying and failing to get his fiction published. In 1981 he attended a course for beginning writers taught by the writer and critic Harlan Ellison. At Ellison's urging, Simmons submitted a story to an unpublished writers competition. A great Sci-Fi collection (Hyperion & Endymion). Some lengths in the novel, but the universe created by Dan Simmons is awesome, to say the least. From the bone chilling horrors of the priest crucifying himself in a hellish burning forest to avoid resurrection, and ending with the poetic beauty of "Life 2.0" in the Fall of Endymion, this book collection is worth every moment reading it.
