Gorey greatly admired the work of the late Victorian nonsense writer Edward Lear.

Daniel Handler (better known as "Lemony Snicket") cites Edward Gorey as an author who inspired his work.
|
"As someone put it, when you're reading Chekhov, you wonder why you ever read anyone else. It's uncanny, simply because you can't quite figure out how he manages to do it....In a sense, it's written mostly in cliches. There's no endless search for the right word, which I find so fatiguing in Mr. Flaubert. But you come to a Chekhov story and find it's almost unbearably moving."

Edward Gorey adored cats and always owned five or six at a time. He was also fond of the ballet and of silent films. He lived in Manhattan until he moved (with his cats) to Cape Cod. During his life he wrote and illustrated over 100 books; he was also a stage and costume designer. Gorey never married or had children, but he was beloved by friends and fans.
