After graduating from high school in 1959, John Saul went to Antioch College. Six years, four colleges, and at least three different majors later, he abandoned notions of higher education and decided that he would become a writer. He worked a series of temporary jobs while sending multiple manuscripts to various publishers until 1976, when an outline for a novel--his first flirtation with the horror genre--was met with approval at Dell Publishing.
