He is best remembered for THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1939), which led to much-needed agricultural reform and has been compared to UNCLE TOM'S CABIN in terms of its impact. In addition to writing novels, Steinbeck was also a successful screenwriter. Despite the strong sense of place in his California fiction, he lived toward the end of his life in New York City, saying, "If you have lived in New York, no place else is good enough."
