A splendid mix of history and fantasy! Judith Tarr's imagination is fertile and on full display with this book.
I enjoyed watching the characters - Alf, most of all - grow. Seeing the different forms of relationships, the personal struggle(s), triumphs, and sorrows of the characters was wonderful.
The book can be a bit hard to finish but it is well worth the read. I've read it well over a dozen times myself.
If fantasy, history, and elegant turns of phrase and though invoking characters are something you enjoy, this is a must read/have collection of the three books:
Isle of Glass
The Golden Horn
Hounds of God
I truly enjoyed - and still enjoy - this book!
