Chilean writer Isabel Allende was actually born in Peru, but raised in Chile. She is the niece of Salvador Allende, the president of Chile who was deposed by a U.S.-backed military coup in 1973. Her parents divorced when she was young, and her mother became involved in a scandalous affair with a Chilean diplomat, whom she later married.
