Hans Augusto Reyersbach, later shortened to Rey, fought with the German army during World War I, after which he moved to Brazil. There he met and married Margaret Waldstein, an author and artist. The couple moved to Paris in 1936, but the Nazi invasion forced them to flee for the United States. Rey's first book, CECILY G.
