Christopher Ricks was born in Beckenham and educated at Oxford. He has spent much of his life as a professor of English, teaching at Bristol and Cambridge in England and at Berkeley, Stanford, Smith, Harvard, Wesleyan, Brandeis, and Boston University in the U.S., where he moved in 1964.
