Art (Avarham) Spiegelman was born in Sweden, but his parents immigrated to the U.S. when he was 3 years old. He studied art both in high school and at Harpur College, from which he graduated in 1968. His first job was designing novelty cards for Tip Top Chewing Gum, and he began to contribute comics to various underground publications, using the pseudonym Al Flooglebuckle.
