Maeve Binchy was born in Dublin and was educated at a convent school in Killiney. She earned a history degree from University College, Dublin in 1960 and taught for several years afterwards in various girls' schools in Ireland. Her first publishing experience occurred when "The Irish Times" printed a letter she wrote home from Israel where she was teaching at a kibbutz.
