 
Scott O'Dell published his first work for children, the 1961 Newbery Award-winner ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, when he was 52. Before writing this book O'Dell had many careers, including newspaper journalist and laborer on a citrus ranch. He also wrote several novels for adults.
