The daughter of lawyer and mystery writer C. W. Grafton, Sue Grafton attended the University of Louisville where she graduated with a B.A. in 1961. She published her first novel, "Keziah", in 1967. While working on the screen adaption of her second novel, "The Lolly-Madonna War", in 1973, Grafton began a 15-year career writing for television and film in Hollywood.
