October 31, 2009 – Which marketing way could make printed books profit?

Yesterday, Hong Kong Book City (香港書城) replied my email. If I wanted to become their supplier, they wanted me through SanMin Bookstore (三民書店) of Taiwan because that might be easy for their operating. This is the fourth internet bookstore wants me through the third party instead of myself. I thought my capital has increased to NT$500,000 might have better chance for direct distribution to bookstore. Unfortunately, the source I found from internet was no direct positive way again. I wonder when I would like to be positive my book marketing way. After the general manager, Cheng Hui Wang (王承惠) of Linkingbooks Co. said there was 40% returning rate would be if my books would let them distribute to bookstores, I wondered which marketing way could make the printing 300 copies profit. It made me hesitate how to market my books. Hong Kong Book City was another source for book marketing again after “Strait Forum” on May this year. Through 5 months, the way for marketing is still pending.

Yesterday, The 5th Cross-Straits Book Fair was started to be held in Xiamen, China. Before yesterday, I have thought to call Tun Lung Chang (張騰龍), the president of Taiwan Magazine Association after I myself brought my 2 parcels of books to his office on August 25th for exhibition. It might be no further contact between Xiamen and I after “Strait Forum” made me no motivation to talk about the trip to Xiamen for the 5th Cross-Straits Book Fair. When I saw the photos on internet about this event, I felt a little lost. Should I choose this way for book marketing? Could it balance the travelling expense?

I have messaged to the general manager, Shu Yuan Chang (張叔言) of Xiamen International Book Centre in June. If I have some income from job such as teaching, translation and accountant, I could go to Xiamen for publishing and book marketing. I was afraid the book sale income might not be enough for living. Although I have prepared cash from “Old Age Pay” for my publishing firm, I couldn’t take any risk for big loss from printing book or others. After all, what money I can use for my later life if I spent out this retirement pay?
