True friendship is defined, beings who go to great lengths for those they care about. The book gives standards for human beings to strive for, ironically set by farm animals.
The detail is exquisite; from the description of the slops fed to Wilbur, to the general atmosphere. I remember reding through the detail many times just to get the same feeling that the characters may have had.
