There were some very good parts, and some real clunkers. He had some good ideas in there and ran with them the wrong way. Still, it was never actually boring, and even bad Gaiman is better than most other fantasy writers. Still, I approach each of his new books with less excitement.

I'm quite biased when it comes to Master Neil, so I'm immediately rating it five stars. But really, this is another astonishing and wonder-ful collection of short works by Neil. He never fails to amaze me!

Some good stories, some not so good. But really just a vehicle for another Shadow story. He should have just buckled down and wrote a sequel to American Gods. I didn't expect to be that interested in seeing Shadow again from another perspective, thinking that American Gods was good enough on its own, not needing to be added to, but I was surprisingly interested as soon as the story got rolling...more

Neil Gaiman has always been one of my favorite writers since I first read his works with "Sandman" from Vertigo. Everything he does seems to be filled with a kind of plausible magic that proves itself here in this collection. "A Study In Emerald" is easily one of my favorites out of this. I'd recommend it to to anyone who likes Neil or magic.

A brilliant collection of short stories and not at all what I expected. Especially the the poems inspired me. Some stories really gave me the creeps. Though not all of the stories convinced me, the ones that did are some of the best I ever read. Neil Gaiman has the wonderful ability to draw you into his story and kicks you over the rim. The next moment you find yourself grabbing for hold -...more

every time my stories stop short, I read this to see how to best pour my imagination onto a page.

every story is a practice in magic itself, whether it is a tale of youth in an incomprehensible universe, or a tale of innocence in a world of corruption, Gaiman takes every angle and lets you sit in the sunrise pondering the world at sunset. the short stories are great because they let me read an entire story in my lunch break, or on the porch of my grand-mothers house... or on a trip halfway a...more

I don't know, Neil Gaiman. You haven't really hooked me, and this is the sort of stuff that I should love. But, reading your stuff feels like listening to the echos of other authors. Enlighten me, anyone who might read this. I read Anasi Boys, and I've read this. Were I to give Gaiman one more chance, what last work should I read? Because I am underwhelmed at the moment.

Great book of short stories as well as a good way to get introduced to Gaiman's work in general

A lovely collection of stories both charming and creepy - featuring a novella that catches up with Shadow from American Gods. I love Neil Gaiman, and will happily keep this in my collection (though not for loan, it's a signed copy!)
