This book is spectacular. Couldn't put it down. Marquez creates a magical world that isn't quite fantasy, but isn't quite real either. He cleverly transitions back and forth so that you're not sure if what he's saying is a metaphor or is actual "reality" (in his world). The story is gripping and he has great characters and a great variety of characters. He tends to wickedly kill (either kills...more

After reading this novel, I've been completely put off magical realism as a genre. The characters were uninspiring, and the plot was unnecessarily complex due to the fact that Marquez kept repeating the names of his characters. One understands WHY he repeats the names, but perhaps that purpose could be served in other ways without making this a tedious read? I'll give credit to Marquez for one...more

This was my first experiment with magical realism not written by Allende, and I found myself less enamored of the style under Marquez's pen. I don't require that all my reads contain happy plots, but neither do I prefer a story for which an alternate title might be "100 Ways To Inbreed or Die in Solitude". The finest aspects of the book for me are found in each character's assuredness of...more

A completely confusing book. Marquez writes in an almost manical fashion, as if he can't get the words in his head onto the paper fast enough. A big problem is the name of characters... mothers tend to give their children all the same name, which makes following a character somewhat confusing. There are so many divergent plots that by the end of the book, I could scarcely remember what...more

Simply the best book I have ever read. My ex used to quote incessantly from it, like men do with 'The Godfather'... But my brother hated it. Go figure. I need to expantiate a bit more after having read some comments on this book and I beleive that there are two camps, kinda like marmite. You either love it or hate it. Like my brother and my ex. Mr. Marquez is writing in the...more

No matter what your teacher/professor says, DON'T START READING MARQUEZ WITH THIS ONE. Is it a masterpiece, yes. Is is beautiful, haunting, epic, etc., etc., yes. Do most students get turned off because it is also dense, purposefully ambiguous, etc., etc., yes. Try some of the short stories first. Get to know and love Marquez, then tackle this one.

If you are looking for an easy read, try "Da Vinci Code". This book is sophisticated, enthralling and other unforgettable. You'll have trouble keeping the names straight at first: José Arcadio Buendía and his progeny who all bear variations of his name - José Arcadio, Aureliano, Aureliano José, Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo. But read on and you will get completely...more

One word describes my feelings for this book: "Rapturous".This book is every bit as amazing as it is held to be. With effortless virtuosity, Marquez throws open a boxful of intriguing, creative, peculiar, idiosyncratic characters which just leap at you and hold you in a trance. Its a hypnotic book, by all means. The writing is so evocative, so fluid, so butter-like, it just flows out...more
