Nihilist, violent, revealing, sometimes sicking... but oh so addictive. 'l'espoir dans la decheance'

The protagonist is not a nice dude. I was on the side of all the people he abused.

An amazing book about the life of 5 Dragons. A rags to riches story full of corruption, greed and foul language.

This has to be one of the most depressing novels ever written - none of the characters has a single saving grace between them and yet it gripped me and held me throughout and it was so sad.

brutally honest - coldly direct, yet extremely telling.. when family members hate each other with a passion yet still do their duty

I confess, I read the book 3/4 way. Just couldn't continue reading the book. Good story line but the story was too depressing: sister against sister, daughters against father, unwanted pregnancy, rape, and many other gory details. Read this book only if you need something to depress you.

Chilling. The friction of Yin and Yang, Haves and Have-Nots, and the wrestling of power from above. I cringed through many sections of this book, found the fatalism of the females in the family believable (though enraging) and felt Tong revealed well the inner animal in man-- the beast beneath the "civil" nature of family, clan, and humanity.
