I have to admit, I only read Wicked after I had heard of the musical and listened to it for months. I was very surprised an delighted to find that the book was much different and was actually very well written. I found out that Son of a Witch was coming out shortly after I finished Wicked and I picked it up the week it was released. I was sadly disappointed in this follow up novel (I don't want...more

I kept having to go back to Wicked to check out details I'd forgotten, but what a wonderful and completely different version of OZ. Seems like one big allegory for the Bush administration to me. I can't wait for the next book and sure hope there is going to be one! And I really did care about what happened to Lir, as odd as he was.

I liked this one much more than Wicked. Liir may be one of my favorite characters from any book I've ever read. We get to see what's inside his head and what he's feeling, which is a nice change from the far-removed narration of Elphaba in Wicked. Liir comes from nothing, and his coming of age is faced with an identity crisis... he has no solid idea of who his parents were, what his...more

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Gregory Maguire for another brilliant story and one with a gay hero. An amazing tale that really means something special to a population with very few visible heroes. Thank you.

A slower read than Wicked, but Son of a Witch sets the stage for the third in the Wicked serious. After all the amazing journeys that have already come, I wonder where Gregory Maguire will take readers next. Maguire delivers a great story with this sequel to Wicked. It follows the life of the witches son... if he really is that.Son of a Witch is not quite as engaging as Wicked, but it does set...more

Disappointing and pretentious. I usually enjoy the heck out of Maguire, but this one and "A Lion Among Men" were sub-par for him, though "Lion" was better.

Son of a Witch starts a little slow but picks its pace up once Liir wakes up from his coma of sorts. Continuing on from Witch (which i absolutely loved), we follow the story of Liir's character as he comes into his own, and grows from a boy who never knew if Elphaba was his mother, into a young assured man with his own history and legacy to live. Enjoyable, and worth the read, and it was nice...more

some people were disappointed in this as a sequel. i was not one of them. i actually re-read it just a couple of weeks ago, and i thought it was great. i think i might like it when authors fuck with my emotions. the fact that all of the heroes in these books have moments of such depravity. i hate them, and then eventually forgive them, and then love them, and ultimately end up feeling some...more
