Donna Jo Napoli's stories are my favorites because she'll change one or two seemingly insignificant details or tell the story from another character's perspective. By doing this, the reader comes away with a new understanding of the original story, while still keeping the main ideas intact. To see what I mean, check out a few of my favs: Crazy Jack, Spinners, Sirena.
That said, I did enjoy Beast. The story is romantic and well-told for the most part. The middle of the book is gorgeous and that's where it hooked me. However, it started a bit slow and the ending was too abrupt. After all the wonderful detail throughout the book, the end deserved a bit more of the same.
