Kundera's book was recommended to me by my Czech tour guide as a must read while in Prague. Bought this book at the Big Ben bookstore behind the courtyard of Our Lady of Tyn. A bleak and totalitarian portrait (what other portrait is there?) of communist Czechoslovakia by the author of the Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Kundera's first book is definitely one of his best. It offers some very insightful descriptions of the politics of a radical youth movement, interposed with a beautiful story of a fall stripped of its tragedy. Just be sure to read the third translation of the novel, which Kundera edited himself- While Kundera approved the second English translation at the time, he later became dissatisfied...more

What do we do with our past, the people in our past? Love hatred and when does it cross the...more

The novel takes place during the Czechoslavian transition into a Communist country. The novel is composed of many jokes which hold strong effect on the characters.

Should be required reading in schools so that todays idiots will stop idealizing communism/socialism.

After The Unbearable Lightness of Being I wanted to read more Kundera. This cured me of that desire. I couldn't get into it.
