"Thief of Time" introduces the time monks to the Discworld. They are vaguely oriental contemplative individuals who keep the flow of time going well (not that it is going well for all individuals). Very interesting and you need to read this before you read "Night Watch."

I am appalled that this book isn't more weel-renowned than it is. Anyone who can reference kung-fu, the Matrix, eschatology, Pete Best, primary school teachers, nursery school rhymes, and quite possibly the scariest villains ever in what is essentially a PHILISOPHICAL NOVEL is doing something right.

Look, that's why there's rules, understand? So that you think before you break 'em. -- (Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time) "No running with scythes!" -- (Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time) "Do not act incautiously when confronting little bald wrinkly smiling men!" -- Rule One (Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time)

Really liked this one - of course the fifth horseman of the apocalypse is now working incognito as a milkman! Again, logic, myth and some well made up crap are twisted perfectly to make sense for the Discworld, and some of my favourite characters have starring roles, including Death and Death's granddaughter. You've also gotta love Sweeper, he's a jammy little git!
