Why didn't I get into libertarian science fiction books sooner? I loved this book...especially the last few chapters - amazing! The story is told from a largely anarchistic world view, but there are valuable lessons for everyone (especially libertarians!). I also loved the sequence of the book, alternating chapters between countries and time, fitting nicely with the theme of...more

Giraffe loves loves loves this book. Giraffe loves Ursula le Guin's utopia. Giraffe's own dream of utopia is what Shevek dreams of too. Go get this book! Read it!

A fantastic book which today is more actual than ever, as we face the destruction of our home-planet by mindless but very powerful individuals.

LeGuin is a visionary, testing the ideas of utopia and dystopia in narrative form. This book is an adventure in freedom, egalitarianism, mutual aid, physics, camaraderie, and love. Enjoyable, insightful, 5 stars. Don't let the first few chapters dissuade you - read this book!

It's hard for me not to compare this book with The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlen because a) they have very similar premises and b) I read them back-to-back. While Heinlen's book was a fun read with some neat ideas behind, it didn't have the emotional or philosophical depth of Le Guin's book, which is, for my personal tastes, the mark of true literature. The Dispossessed is a superb...more

Iznimno zanimljiva i poučna knjiga.

Excellent novel. Does what Sci-Fi does best - discuss the implications of today's society by casting the issues into a fantasy future.

I agree with everything that's been said here. The politics of this book remain engaging, well-balanced and interesting. What really sells the book for me is the love story and the characterisation of Shevek. I can't think of many books where I felt this close to a character by the end (although perhaps 'Left Hand of Darkness is another contender for this). The final line gets me every single...more

Too much extemporizing on the philosophy of capitalism and filled with scenes that didn't support or demonstrate character growth. And even though I was hating this through every chapter, when the aliens from across the galaxy rescued the main character at the end of the book, I lost every ounce of little respect that I had.
