Believable and captivating characters. Parts of the story read like poetry. The setting is a very thinly disguised time after the fall of Rome and the rise of Constantinople - the time of Justinian.

I loved Kay's attention to detail and interleaving threads. There are a lot of characters and perspectives that help bring Kay's world to life. Some characters intrigued me a lot more than others, but all added to the layered approach of really describing what life was life in the city. I couldn't wait to get my hands on part II
