I read this book in two sessions, over three months apart. In a way I suppose it's kind of fitting given that the book itself is separated thus. However I can't hep feeling that if i'd read it in one i'd not only be talking about one of the best books i've read but also about THE best book i've read.The reason for this is that when reading the first half I found the story (dare i say it) tedious at times. Which is why I let the book slide until two days ago. Now, having read the second half, I realise that Harper Lee is simply building up. Every minute moral, sub-plot and description leads to the epic climax. A climax that will tell you more about human nature than any other book I can mention at this time.That the story is told through the narrative of one 8 year old girl is testament to the phrase 'out of the mouths of babes'. There's not much more I can say without either reducing the book down to a form where the sum of its parts is less than the whole or spoiling the plot..   hide

One of my favorites. I've probably read it 6 or 7 times. I quote it like people quote movies. "Pass the damn ham" makes me laugh out loud every time, even when I know it's coming. I disagree completely with a previous review that says the book plays on the idea that black men want to rape white women. The book is about a white man who molested his white daughter, and about another man who tries to teach an entire community, and especially his children, in a racist time and place that the colour of skin should not be an issue. To Kill a Mockingbird is a wonderful story.   hide

i think the main thing i took away from this book is the rendemption that comes from acceptance whether it be of your family members, you neighbours or your fellow man. Atticus has to be one of the hottest literary figures ever, the right combintion of desirable (he is single after all) and someone you admire so much you wish you were him.

Whoever doesn't like this book is crazy. It's brilliant and even though there are more, and maybe better books on the subject, Harper Lee set the precident. She was a ground-breaker, and this book has value in society. It is especially important because children can read and understand it, making it less like a textbook and takes the message to the ground level. I read it every year, it never...more
