Garcia Marquez describes a mythical town somewhere in South America from its beginnings to its end. He specifically follows the lineage of the town's founder, describing their habits, superstitions, and lives. He has a masterful way of making the everyday seem fantastic and the mythical seem everyday. In the course of the story, he manages some political commentary by way of his description of the town's relationship with the outside world. At times this is hilariously true, at times depressingly... true.
This book is as real as it gets.
Highly highly highly recommended.
