Beautifully written, a vivid depiction of the early colonialists' lives in south America, and specifically of the protagonist Ines, who actually belonged to the "bad guys" side. At one point I lost track of who's who, and a large chunk in the middle is repetitious, but then wait till you get to the last section...oh boy

Allende creates wonderful female characters. I read this because I was travelling to Peru and Chile and it was great to follow some part...more

Great book about the life of the mistress of the conquistador who first entered Chile and began the Spanish settlements there. An amazing story of the life of this woman and her experiences, poignant, harrowing, and well researched by Allende.
