Hot off the presses!  I wanted to read The Luxe right away, because it's being called the Gossip Girl series of 1899 (it's set in Manhattan circa 1899).  Truly though, it was a let down.  While well written, with a lot of potential, there was very little in the way of plot.  When you know from the first 20 minutes of reading EXACTLY what's going to happen in the rest of the book-then the author...more

While well written, with a lot of potential, there was very little in the way of plot.  When you know from the first 20 minutes of reading EXACTLY what's going to happen in the rest of the book-then the author really should have tried a little harder.  The characters are lovable though, so I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy this book.   hide

Pretty good book.It's about a rich family growing up in new york city in the year 1899. After discovering that the family fortune has been lost due to the father's debt, the two oldest girls must obey their mother's wishes and marry for money and not love. Despite the plot, this was a pretty good book.

I really liked it, but I found it a little hard to get through... Perhaps because I am so used to fantasy and a lot of adventure... Either way, I loved it :)

It's a shallow book with an easy to follow plot... perfect for a plane or the beach. It doesn't make you think very hard.

The cover was what drew me to this book, and the setting. I was excited to read a young adult novel set in the Victorian era, as I cannot seem to find many. This book, though, left some to be desired. I was also quite a bit disappointed that the author put so much emphasis on the characters' looks. It seemed like their appearances were the only reason that they could love each other. There...more

This book, though, left some to be desired. I was also quite a bit disappointed that the author put so much emphasis on the characters' looks. It seemed like their appearances were the only reason that they could love each other. There were so many physical descriptions that I felt as though we were only meant to focus on the fact that the characters are young, beautiful, and wear fancy dresses.   hide

Yeah not bad - a series with a difference. The attention to detail is good but the author is a bit on herself, there's an interview and tips etc when she's a first time writer. A bit odd.

this book has been (surprisingly by my community's normal reading habits) flying off the shelf and i picked it up at the store to find out what it's all about. 1899 manhattan: gossip girl style. that about sums it up and i can't wait to add it to my read-a-likes list.

The begining of this book almost turned me away. However I kept pushign through it and eventually it held me enough. However UI felt like this was too much of a soap opra for me. The only reason I even consider reading the next book was because the end of the book was very attention catching and I was VERY surprised. If you have a little extra time and this just happen to be there, i say read it,...more
