As a fan of Paranormal State, I really enjoyed Ryan Buell's book about how both the PRS and the show came together, including how he came to be interested in the paranormal, and some behind the scenes memoirs of the first season's investigations. There is also some insight into who his staff are and how they came to be in PRS as well as his association with some of the experts and psychics that...more
 As a fan of Paranormal State, I really enjoyed Ryan Buell's book about how both the PRS and the show came together, including how he came to be interested in the paranormal, and some behind the scenes memoirs of the first season's investigations. There is also some insight into who his staff are and how they came to be in PRS as well as his association with some of the experts and psychics that join PRS on investigations. It's both a fun book and a bit scary as some of the darker elements of the paranormal they have delt with are detailed here. My only monor disappointment was he still only gives vague details on the haunting that plagued him as a boy and got him started on the path he walks now. But, as it is a personal issue, maybe he still has problems talking about it and admire he didn't force himself for the sake of the book. I hope there is a follow about more current seasons. This was a great compliment to season 1 and look forward to more details about the following seasons... with the lights on, of course.   hide

Top rate autobiography of Ryan Buell and his journey into the paranormal which leads him to star in "Paranormal State". As he takes you behind the scenes of his cases, he reveals parts of himself which have long been held as private. You'll come away knowing more about the paranormal, and much more about the young man behind the series. He is a smart, humble person who's drive for social jutice...more

Buell's PARANORMAL STATE could easily have been used as a gimmick to sell the show.  However, what the book offers is an overview of the start of the Penn State Paranormal Society and how it ultimately became an A&E phenomenon.  Though Buell still doesn't delve much into the childhood paranormal experiences that he claims drove him to start PRS, he does give some insight into early encounters...more
 Buell's PARANORMAL STATE could easily have been used as a gimmick to sell the show.  However, what the book offers is an overview of the start of the Penn State Paranormal Society and how it ultimately became an A&E phenomenon.  Though Buell still doesn't delve much into the childhood paranormal experiences that he claims drove him to start PRS, he does give some insight into early encounters with darker forces.  He also offers a decent history of the group, its rocky beginnings, and eventual expansion into a viable paranormal investigative society with contacts throughout the paranormal community.

Those familiar with the show will recognize most of the cases that Buell recounts, though he does toss in some extra behind-the-scenes information that never made it into episodes.  These insights show some of the ups and downs of paranormal investigating, as well as the less glamorous moments that can make an investigation drag on.  All in all, this isn't a bad book for both fans of Paranormal State and the paranormal in general.   hide
