I had seen the film of this and Of Mice and Men but never read Steinbeck until this turned up on my shelf by accident! I read it with ever increasing memory of the film and the narrative chapters were very useful to a Brit because it kinda helped get point across; the enormity of what was happening and yet his writing style comes across as really simple. Very clever indeed. I got to the end and couldn't believe it was the end, I wanted to know what happened next! Have now gotten hold of an omnibus with 3 other Steinbeck novels in because I read this one!   hide

Made me super depressed, but great writer.

I've been so hesitant to start this. I'll be brave and put this on my list!

Not a big Steinbeck fan.
