Brilliant volume ably demonstrating why Steinbeck has continued to win accolades from literary critics and casual readers alike. The volume is a series of vignettes loosely associated with the daily exploits of a group of paisanos bumming about a town near Monterrey. Hilariously paced and colorfully composed, I know I'll be returning to it again in the not-too-distant future.

Hillarious. I didn't know Steinbeck could be so comical. Very funny commentary on the life of the paisanos near Monterrey, CA. How their lives are filled with a sucession of busy nothings, and how they get drunk all the time, steal, and sit around moralizing. Quite entertaining.

this is one of the more lighthearted, good humored novels of steinbeck's. i enjoyed it tremendously, because the characters are all very real. good development as always..

These guys drink so much wine that you have got to love 'em. Great little book about a group of rascals that is not only timelessly funny, but also makes you think about times when you had a bunch of good friends, lived simply, and had little responsibility - and how times have changed.

Really easy read. The book centered around a handful of poor immigrants in Monterey, CA. At first each character was introduced to help the others cheat and not pay rent, but in the end they all became good friends. Interesting view of money's effect on people.
