I wanted to read this book because it is an American classic, and I hadn't read anything from the Beat generation. I will certainly try other books by Kerouac to see if it is just this book or if it's his style altogether that doesn't agree with me.

My main problem with this book is that I couldn't care less about the characters. Dean and Sal weren't heroic or interesting, and their trips seemed pointless to me. I don't think they spent enough time sober to actually get to know the people and their "souls" in the places they stopped. At the end, I was more annoyed than anything else, wanting to scream "just grow up!" :o)
