While he does reuse some of the tropes from Tortilla Flat, there is a lot to love about this book.

great book. likable characters and an easy read. Normal Steinbeck flow (on and on)..

I read this in Monterey where the story takes place and was able to walk through the town and see the places Steinbeck was talking about. Fantastic!!!

Steinbeck really knows how to place you in the scene. Reading this makes me feel like I am in old time Monterey. The characters have real personality and relation is all too easy with Steinbecks descriptions.
