A classic story and a great read.

I'm not sure I can say anything new about this novella that hasn't already been said. It is excellent, shocking, endearing, etc. I've taught the book, and directed the play version. I'm not sure I can say anything new about this novella that hasn't already been said. It is excellent, shocking, endearing, etc. I've taught the book, and directed the play version. It is on the "must read" list for any reader in any culture. Here's an interesting trivia fact about the book: Steinbeck's dog, Charlie, ate the first draft of the novel, so the author had to recreate the entire novella from memory. Buy it, read it, own it, pass it on to others. If you read it as a high school student, reread it as an adult. For such a short novel, I've always discovered new elements in it every time I reread it.   hide

Excellent screen adaptation of the John Steinbeck classic about two drifters in the Depression who move from ranch to ranch in search of work. Perfect pairing of Meredith and Chaney (his finest screen performance) as George and Lennie. In a year of great classic movies, it should be no surprise that this film falls into that category as well. Oscar nominated for the Best Picture of 1939. Of mice and Men is good because it is a thin book that tells a long story. John Steinbeck's description fits the incident that is to occur very well. It is straightforward and sounds very true to me. The beautiful world that Lennie and George have imagined is not possible to be obtained at that time. Their tragic end is well painted in the portrait of the circumstance that they are in. It has called upon my sympathy, making me feel naturally how unfair that society is. It is a book that will not take much time to read, but it will definitely tell you something.Of mice and Men is good because it is a thin book that tells a long story. I think I was maybe 14 or 15 years old when I first read this small powerhouse of a book about two drifters who dream of a place to call thier own. It was also the first time a book made me cry. I think the most lasting impact this story had on me was that through the relationship of George and the simple-minded giant Lenny, I first discovered the complexities, contradictions, and sacrifices of human love. What better lesson can a book offer ? Definately one of my all- time favorite books.   hide
