beautiful short stories set in the area of Cali I just visited. His characters are so rich and he describes the land in a way you can see it yourself. Beautiful writing.

Excellent, considering these stories were written very early in Steinbeck's career. Definitely worth reading--this whacked-out community ain't nothing like heaven. These interconnected short stories about a community that's less than perfect are quite good, considering Steinbeck wrote them early in his career.
