What is worse? A catastrophic event or the fear of its occurrence? Death or the fear of death? Does a definitive truth exist or is truth what we choose to believe from what we are told? This complex novel enters this arena with solid characters, skewed humor, and not a small amount of tension and dread. I'm not sure it provides any answers but the investigation is frustratingly entertaining.

Some very interesting ideas explored here. Makes you think - always a good quality in a book.

Not sure I completely "got it", but an interesting read, and far more compelling than "Underworld".

You know when you read a book with someone in mind? Hard for me to get away from the persistant idea of who read it before me. Hard not too, as the persons shadow is all over this house. University/intellectual satire of American life, death(dark) obsessions, culture warriors....

If it wasn't the first work of post-modern fiction, it's certainly the most seminal one. Delilo's witty and elusive tale is addicting from the first page, and it's subtext hasn't lost a wink of relevance.

This is a "must read" that no one should. It has its moments of stunning DeLillo prose, buy they merely induce you dive futher into disappointment. White Noise may have been something novel or even needed in the mid '80s, but after the turn of the century, it has the effect of polemic jack hammer.

It was a good book- funny and absurd. A professor of Hitlerian studies that can't speak German, people fascinated by packaging in a grocery store, simulated disasters and anyone could die at any moment. My major compaint though is the ending. It's not subtle by any means yet at the same time it doesn't conclude what needs to be concluded.

I HATE this novel. HATE. Strong word, I know. But I was forced to write an essay about this is my first year of undergrad.

an increasingly sad book. funny, but sad. delillo's writing is superb. and his narrative seems to tug, ever so slightly, on the breathing, living, tormented unconscious. Super involved writer, Dellilo is. Almost too involved and detailed and manic, at times. a somewhat funny, mostly sad rendering of death, and how we handle it.

I love books. I really do. I mean, I would spend my whole life reading books if I could, and I haven't found a book I hated yet. Not till I started White Noise. I didn't get any of the characters, or the plot, but I kept reading because I wanted to give the book a fair chance. I was wrong: the book was awful after the first ten pages, terrible after the first twenty five and absolutely horrible...more
