A wonderful book for a family read-aloud!

Childhood favorite.

Frankly, I don't understand why anyone would forbid this book... Yes, it's magical. The best children's books are. Yes, there are references to tobacco and alcohol. Life does. James doesn't smoke, use snuff nor drink alcohol. The "magical" worm thingies are code words for drugs? Actually, I was thinking of the magic beans of Jack and the Beanstalk. Frankly, I don't understand why anyone would forbid this book... Yes, it's magical. The best children's books are. Yes, there are references to tobacco and alcohol. Life does. James doesn't smoke, use snuff nor drink alcohol. The "magical" worm thingies are code words for drugs? Actually, I was thinking of the magic beans of Jack and the Beanstalk. Even the name of the book refers to that. But perhaps some people haven't read fairytales, because they have been too focused on drugs? Yes, Mexicans eat grasshoppers as snacks. Is that supposed to be a racist remark? The spider licks her lips and some people see that as sexual? I never did. I don't think I remember next time I read the book to remember that spider is a sex bomb. I really don't think 10-years-olds think that way. It advocates communism? What? It advocates friendship and co-operation. If you think that is communism, you don't deserve friends nor anyone to live, work or have fun with. James is disobedient towards her guardians? His guardians abuse him severely and should never have been let near a child. If a child is being abused by his parents HE SHOULD BE DISOBEDIENT AND GET HIMSELF OUT OF THE HOUSE. Children have died because they have obeyed insane rules. ADULTS have died because they have obeyed insane rules. Nah. Let your children read Roald Dahl. Uncle Roald doesn't teach children anything bad.   hide

I've read this book a bunch of times and have seen the movie just as much! Can never get enough of Roald Dahl's wonderful imagination!

Read this book with my 7-year-old daughter and my 2-year-old son, both who couldn't wait to read it each night. Roald Dahl has become a favorite in our household; we plan to read as many of his books as possible. Dahl is a master with words. His descriptive language transports the reader on a fantasy adventure where anything is possible.

Its not bad, but not that good either.

Actually listened to this one with the kids on a road trip. Wonderfully told. Roald Dahl is great!

This fantasy is truly amazing. A great read.
