My favorite of Roald Dahl's children's books, this was the very first book that got me into his works in the first place. The story is just so unique and we have such a kind-hearted, curious hero in James that children cannot help but read more to find out about what will become of him. The characters are extremely colorful and fun, and Dahl's imagination just runs way over the top. So much...more

If I knew I could have studied Roald Dahl at university, I would have done a PhD. Now I realize I could have written a thesis deconstructing the feminine symbolism behind the idea of riding across the ocean inside a giant fleshy peach.

Probably his most reknowned book, and maybe rightly so. This book is just the tip of the iceberg of Dahl's amazing imagination, in my opinion. I think this novel is a good introduction to Dahl's work because it is such a complete novel, while some of his others are a little more abstract and crazy. Such an enjoyable read.

What memories. I actually have the version from 1964 and it's the best version. Has all of the aspects of a kid with an imagination (and adults too), imaginary friends and a vision and passion for life. Much like the visions I had as a child. This one really had a great beginning, middle and end too!

This story kept me thinking about giant bugs and peaches for the whole summer when I was a 6th grader. I'd love to read this again someday.
