The House of the Seven Gables (The Penguin American Library)

This was a very slow read.

read it every year since i was 12

Some little bits of comedy kept me going through this. Hawthorne gets his points across well with his vivid descriptions. Still not sure if I liked the ending or not.

A pretty good story about redemption, but the ending was a bit contrived. Also, his prose was clunkier than his short stories. I think Hawthorne works better over the short form, but this was still worth reading. Oh, and Phoebe, the young ray of sunshine in the Pyncheons' life, was unbelievably precocious to me.

I actually saw the house Hawthorne refers to in the story. It really does have 7 gables on it's roof. I like reading Hawthorne, but he can be a bit much to get through at times, with the language.

This book is VERY discriptive...so much so that it almost gets in the way of the story (in my opinion). But for the most part I really like his style; very romantic/poetic and somthing different for a change.

Much more interesting after going through the actual house in Salem,MA

A classical Book of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Not my favorite book, but much better than Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey

This is another example of a classic that just plods along, and bored me to tears. I struggled though to the end, but just barely.
