If there is any truth in this statement, Eustacia Vye personifies it. She gets what she does not desire and does not deserve either. Fate is a bit harsh on her. Her end strengthens our belief that Contentment, although rare, is a valuable Virtue

Really tragic, incredibly melodramatic.  Not so much my kind of book, but Hardy is a talented author nonetheless.
