My favourite so far (I haven't got round to reading all the novels in the Les Rougon Macquart series). Just flicked through the book looking for a good quote and I found a line of dialogue I'd underlined: 'Well, well, here's my brother, the biggest c*nt of the lot!' shouted Jesus Christ ['Jesus Christ' is the cognomen of the character speaking.] That's...more

great book Ghayur, go back and read it again. Your review is way off the mark. It is a desolate book, but also very funny. It has a truth to it that can't be denied, however incomplete the picture.

Very much in the mood of late 19th Century realism. There is no goodness, no decency, no honour. Society is broken and religion is turned on its head. Glad I read it, it has stayed with me for years, but once is enough.

Zola is a fool. This is the most turgidly idiotic novel of the nineteenth century.

Brilliant Book. I was hoping that the really money-grabbing murderous characters would get their just rewards, but they come out on top. There is very little affection shown by any any characters, all driven by lust, greed and the pleasure of seeing others suffer. Was life really like this in late 19th century rural France?

This book is famous for containing one of the most frightening and horrific depictions of outrageous mob behavior ever written. I've yet to meet anyone who was not sick and revulsed after reading it. All wrapped up in a superb tale set against the backdrop of 19th centurt french agriculture.

This is the first book I ever read which had no positive/hopeful ending........sad yet realistic. After reading this was possibly when I started maturing up......not to say that I still don't live in a bubble but maybe the bubble is a bit flimsier than before!!
