An excellant book about the Russian life. Too, gave a very graphic description on the horrors of war, the loss of life. i loved it and have read it many times yrs ago. Do need to reread it again to refresh memory on it.

Glad I finally got around to reading it, some brilliant parts, but a strangely unsatisfying read in many ways.

One should skim a few pages here and there to finish this book, but apart from that, a classic that is actually worth the reading effort.

Tolstoy is a master in illuminating the human condition! Yes it is about war, peace, love... the search for the very meaning of Life itself through each well rounded character. What does 'it' all mean? Complex in its blend of far reaching and near; of the spiritual AND the mundane. A wonderful winter read. Once you get past the initial war scenes it gets to be an easy peruse AND exciting. Ive...more

I started this with the assumption that there must be something to it(as everyone reads it, or at least tries to), but as I read it I really started to enjoy it, and yes it is at times a very hard read, but in the end a very good read. His assertion that there is no free will, is an interesting point of view and is still something that science is still trying to prove, that he came to this so...more

No doubt a literary triumph, but for me only as this book holds the Guinness record for being so unrelentlessly breathy. Whilst I realise that it was written as a long series of featurettes in a local journal, it is strung out to such an extent that by the time you are flicking through the final pages, you wonder whether you shouldn't have jumped ship months ago and just read up about the...more

This was my third attempt and I finished 75% of the book. Sadly, I was unable to enjoy the many plots because (a) there were SO many plots and (b) they moved glacially slow. I liked his writing style on the soap-opera aspects of the novel, but his battlefield narrative, while maybe impressive a century ago, has been usurped by other writers since then.

Brilliant. Many people are put off by the length of War and Peace, but the book does not run nearly 1,400 pages purely for the novelty of doing so: Tolstoy provides insights on love, war, marriage, death, family, work, religion, childhood and history with an intriguing philosophical perspective, particularly concerning fate and the perceived greatness of man. Certainly the book is a project and...more

When you've never read a classic and you hear people jabber on about the greatness of the classics, you usually think they're fooling themselves. However, this book is truly one of the few that belongs in some canon somewhere. Once you get the names down it's easier to get through. Yet, if you don't get them ALL then you'll do just fine. The writing is so descriptive, a truly excellent example....more
