There are not many things that can hold my attention completely and make me read open-mouthed. This play is one of those things. This might sound like a broken record, considering it is a classic in dramatic literature, but it is simply an amazing play. I'm playing Howard, Willy's boss, in a production of this play. It is a beautiful, moving piece of work. Willy is a man losing everything, his son, his job, his handle on reality. His struggle to make sense of his life, and to have his life matter, makes this a true classic of American theatrical literature.

Det er litt synd at tekster som denne er pensum på så mange forskjellige engelskkurs. Stykket er et veldig bra tids- og tankedokument fra amerikansk etterkrig, og lider nok litt under at elever og studenter ikke har noe valg om å lese det. For knuste drømmer og kjipe reality checks angår vel de fleste, og leste man den frivillig ville den kanskje berørt mye mer. Nå vet vi...more

It was okay. Actually, I ended up writing an essay on this on my AP Lit test, even though this was my least favorite thing we read during the year. It was way too melodramatic for my tastes. Miller has a good point to make, but he hammers it over and over and makes it seem far more dramatic than it really is.

This play discusses that often what we convince ourselves or are taught what will makes us happy in the long run rings false. Willy Loman has spent his life being concerned with what people think of him and focused on the model of the American dream with wife, kids, house, and car.
