This is an insightful story with images of America which are not easily forgotten. I have loved this book for many years. I go back and re-read it every so often. It's just one of those books.

My man John NEVER disappoints. This time it's his personal journey across America with his Poodle, Charley in the early 1960s. He laments the changing landscape and the dying rural areas stating that even the food tastes bland and clean in the "modern America". Interesting that in every decade it is human nature to be saddened/haunted by what was and never will be again. Chocked full of funny...more

Steinbeck's writing is just awesome. Some sentences or lines applied both to his journey across the US, and seemed like they were also statements about life, and those I copied onto the cover of my current journal, which followed me around on my own journeys. Steinbeck is awesome. I'm keepin' my copy on my "Top Shelf". Loving it ... At least no one living in California...more
