Travels with Charley in Search of America: (Centennial Edition)

This is an insightful story with images of America which are not easily forgotten. I have loved this book for many years. I go back and re-read it every so often. It's just one of those books.

My man John NEVER disappoints. This time it's his personal journey across America with his Poodle, Charley in the early 1960s. He laments the changing landscape and the dying rural areas stating that even the food tastes bland and clean in the "modern America". Interesting that in every decade it is human nature to be saddened/haunted by what was and never will be again. Chocked full of funny observations and interesting encounters. And of course, all served up in his classic, clean, yet descriptive Steinbeck style. I SO wish he were alive and still writing. He won the Pulitzer two years later and sadly died 8 years after his trip ended.   hide
