This is the Bond they don't show in the movies. This James Bond could be played by Clint Eastwood. Rough, tough, and evenly matched with other spies and anti-spies in the world. Gritty, not suave. Audiobook narrated by Simon Vance, who does his normally excellent job.

Am reading the first four or five James Bond novels as a diversion, and have a feeling that each one gets a little more outlandish and less interesting. Makes me want to re-read John LeCarre's Karla Trilogy, though, reminds me that "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" is one of my favorite novels of all time.

The first appearance of James Bond, a great read that doesn't age at all even though it takes place during the cold war.

I never thought I could say it, but the film was actually better! Thank you, Daniel Craig!

Fleming's Bond is quite different that what is portrayed in the movies. He's dark, cold, and ruthless. Fleming isn't a particularly great write in Casino Royale - his writing is quite generic, but it moves along at a fast pace and keeps you entertained. I do look forward to reading more by Fleming, and I assume his generic writing is only a result of this being his first novel.
