First published in 1843, Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol is a classic. 

I received it as a Christmas present back in 1984, and I used to read it every year at Christmas time. 

Like his other novels, A Christmas Carol shows Dickens's sympathy for the poor, and disdain for selfishness and greed. 

Adapted for television and film many times, even with the Muppets.
