Very deserving of the newberry award. Also u don't really find alot of kids literature regarding the lives of immigrants. I was an Asian who moved to the states at arnd the same age so I could relate. The story was beautifully written and very touching. I think the author did well capturing the children's perception and the cultural element. Highly recommend all kids to read as part of cultural...more

Great book. Very accurately describes the feelings, emotions and thought processes of those who grow up with intellectually disabled siblings.

This is the best historical fiction piece I think I have ever read. I would recommend it for children between the ages of 10 and 14, but any age will enjoy this story. I read it for fun, but I would love to study things like common life on Alcatraz and Natalie's mental disease. Great book. Quick read. Astonishing ending.

A coming of age story in which Moose cares for his older autistic sister. It's an easy, light read with a nice twist to the ending. Includes many adventures of the small gang of kids living together on Alcatraz where their parents are employed. Introduces issues related to autistic children in the 30s, but doesn't address them. It isn't really a thoughtful or thought provoking book.
