He thought about this. "Plastic ware." "Yes. It was on sale." We stood there. From inside the yellow house, I could hear the TV, and someone laughing. "Plastic ware," he said slowly, "like knives and forks and spoons?" "I brushed a bit of dirt off the back of my car and said casually, "Yeah, I guess. Just the basics, you know." "Did you need plastic ware?" he asked. I shrugged. "Because," he went on, and I fought the urge to squirm, "it's so funny, because I need plastic ware. Badly." "Can we go inside please?" I asked slamming the trunk shut. "It's hot out here." He looked down at the bag again, then at me. And then, slowly, the smile I knew and dreaded crept across his face. "You bought me plastic ware" he said. "Didn't you?" "No," I growled. "You did!" he hooted, laughing out loud. "You bought me some forks. And knives. And spoons. Because----" "No," I said loudly. "----you love me!" he grinned, as if he'd solved the puzzler for all time, as I felt a flush creep across my face. "It was on sale," I told him again, as if it was some kind of excuse. "You love me," he said simply, taking the bag and adding it to the others. "Only seven bucks," I added, but he was already walking away, so sure of himself. "It was on clearance, for God's sake." Sarah Dessen is definately up there on my list of favorite author's, but I loved this book the most. It's funny, tough, and at times, heartbreaking; as all of her books are. Remy is amazingly screwed up, and I adore Dexter! The way he sees through her is perfect. And all of the quirks!! Lol. The bets are hilarious, and monkey, and the band... Sarah Dessen is definately up there on my list of favorite author's, but I loved this book the most. It's funny, tough, and at times, heartbreaking; as all of her books are. Remy is amazingly screwed up, and I adore Dexter! The way he sees through her is perfect. And all of the quirks!! Lol. The bets are hilarious, and monkey, and the band... Also, the family relationships are perfect, with Chris and his girlfriend, Remy and her many stepfathers- and Remy's coming to terms with her own father. The repetition of the lyrics of This Lullaby are perfect. Kind of reminded me of Uptown Girls in that way(Molly Smiles) but I don't know which one even came first,soo.... This book rocks. READ IT, along with all other books by this author. I read alot, and this book is exceptional, and it totally sticks with you.    hide

One of Sarah Dessen's greatest strengths is writing completely believable characters with several traits that you feel like you could actually meet in real life. This Lullaby is no different. Although Dessen is venturing into love story territory, there are still interesting characters aside from Remy & Dexter - I loved the boys in Dexter's band. :) This book perfectly portrays the truth of teenage love - it's tricky, tough, dramatic, but in the end, it's always something worthwhile.   hide

This is one of my favorite books. The characters (all of them) and the scenes (for me, especially with the photo's that Dexter gave Remy) leap right off the page and into your heart. I recomend this HIGHLY. You won't be disappointed.
