The French hold a convention and more or less accidentally wind up with a King again while Communists secretly plot to overthrow the government. Funny. Very very funny.

It's been a while since I've read this one but I have to say, Steinbeck's sole effort at political satire is a brilliant and hillarious success. In particular I recall the comparison of a king to "Father Chrismas" and the marriage to the "Egg King" of Petaluma ("Baby, I'm Ape about him!").
A wonderful "fabrication" from the master writer from Salinas.

Steinbeck's only satire, and the only one of his books I can really stand. Before modern American's hated the French, Steinbeck penned this novel that pokes fun at all the flaws in their culture.
