This is a story about the American Working Man in the post WWI years and His fight against becoming an exploited tool in the capitalist machine. Steinbeck's empathy with the labor class of his day shines from this work.

I'm on my third read of this. I would like to adapt it for a film.

Very good. From the beginning, I considered this one of Steinbeck's lesser works. In some ways, I would still say that, but the last half is every bit as heart wrenching and compelling as The Grapes of Wrath or Of Mice and Men. The ending was incredibly well executed. Definitely worth the read, if you have the time.

I'm running out of Steinbecks to read now, but this lesser known work is up there with the best of them, when I'd assumed otherwise. Written from the perspective of a communist organiser in the 1930s in the midst of a fruit pickers' strike in the US, it naturally attracted a deal of controversy when it was published, but it does not glorify the left, nor the capitalist cause. When you sign up to iread they ask you for your 'favourites'. Now i could have chosen any favourites, but i think this is one of his least read and most crunchingly misanthropic works. Compare the last passages of this with the end of 'Grapes' and see an angrier, bloodied, and cynical eye on The Depression. The Battle of the title is the fight to Unionise migrant fruit pickers, the dubious is...more

This is my favorite Steinbeck book of all time. Unashamedly leftist and stunningly brutal/beautiful. Fabulous.

This book could not be more relevant to today's socio-economic and political landscape. At many times I feel as though McCarthyism is making a comeback, and both sides are convinced they are taking the moral high road, while painting the other in the most unflattering light possible.Heavy duty ending of Grapes of Wrath proportions. It lingers with you long after you finish it. Fantastic story.
